The Bakharwal Dog is indigenous to the Pir Panjal Mountain region and is a molosser type of dog. This location is found in the Kashmir Himalayas. The Bakharwal Dog is an ancient breed with many different names, some of which include: Kashmire Sheepdog, Bakharwal Mastiff, Kashmiri Bakharwal, Gujjar Watchdog and the Kashmiri Mastiff. This breed originated in India.
The Bakharwal Dog is a natural born guardian and protector. From livestock to settlements, this breed has been a working dog in this capacity for many centuries. The bloodlines of this specific dog date back to ancient times so this canine has an inherent desire to continue the work of its ancestors.
Bakharwal Dogs are very agile and very quick for their size. They have an ample supply of endurance and stamina. Their athletic build includes a toned and muscular body, straight back, long legs and broad shoulders. The dense and thick bone structure displays a powerful physique. This is a very strong dog.
The Bakharwal’s fur coat is of medium length. It is thick and protects the dog from harsh weather conditions. The skin is also very thick which helps protect the body from sustaining damage from predators. The most common colours of the coat are black and tan although some tri-colours can emerge from this breed.
Bakharwal Dogs desire to protect land and people. They do form bonds with people but they do not look to humans for orders as to how they should guard, making them a very independent breed.
