The Neapolitan Mastiff dog breed goes by many names. Originating in Italy, this dog is also referred to as the Italian Mastiff or Mastino. They are even called Mastini when spoken of in plural form. Although the Neapolitan Mastiff can be a friendly dog, they are not recommended for people new to owning a dog. They have a stubborn demeanour and are often hard to control.
Neapolitan Mastiffs are best known for their unique look. Their bodies are covered in loose, wrinkled skin. This is especially the case on their face as they have a bunch of wrinkles and folds. This adds an extra grooming factor for owners as it is important to keep the dog clean between folds of skin. Their coats are short and coarse. There are four major colours of a Neapolitan Mastiff. They can be tawny, mahogany, grey or black. They may have specks of white on their chest and feet as well.
A large breed, the Neapolitan Mastiff’s height ranges from 61 to 79 centimetres. Females are slightly shorter than males. Mastiffs also have an average weight of 64 to 70 kilograms, although they have been known to reach weights of as much as 90 kilograms.
Keeping a watch on their family, Neapolitan Mastiffs are a very protective breed. They are wary of any new people who set foot on the family’s property, so it is important to show your dog that the new person is welcome. Neapolitan Mastiffs are often hard to control, even with vigorous training. Because of this, they are best suited for people who already have experience working with dogs.
