Boerboel – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Boerboel, which originated in South Africa, is a molosser type of dog. It is also known as the South African and the South African Mastiff. By nature, they are a highly protective breed and have been used throughout time for guarding property, families and animals.

This particular breed is one that requires constant human companionship. When they feel alone or neglected they can become destructive. With time, this can grow into a dangerous mindset and temperament. This should not be a discouraging factor but rather a factual point. The Boerboel is not a reckless or dangerous canine but the behaviour tends to become so if they lack human bond, activities and mental stimulation.

The body of the Boerboel is well balanced and strong. The powerful physique is definitely a deterrent for predators and dangerous people. The muscles are tight and sturdy. Their Mastiff nature is visible and they are incredibly agile. The colours are usually brindle, black, brown, fawn, red and cream shades.

For best temperament results, the Boerboel needs to be introduced to other animals and children early on in life. They should be consistently played with and have a constant human connection. They are not intended for in house pets or apartment life. They require a lot of room to roam and daily exercise. Training can help if needed and due to this breed’s intelligence, it can be relatively easy to achieve temperament and behaviour goals.
