The Mudhol Hound is an Indian breed of dog originating from the Deccan Plateau area of India. It goes by two official names in India. Through the Kennel Club of India, it is referred to as a Caravan Hound, while the Indian National Kennel Club calls it a Mudhol Hound. In smaller Indian communities and tribes, they are also called Karwani, Pashmi, and other names.
This ancient dog breed has very distinct features that set it apart from other dogs. Its head is long and tapers from a wide skull to a thin, pointed mouth. Its body is long, lean and sturdy. They range in height from 64 to 72 centimetres, where male Mudhol Hounds tend to be slightly taller.
While Mudhol Hounds do provide wonderful companionship, they are often best used for working. They have a calm demeanour that favours well for hunting. Since they are a somewhat large breed of dog, they need wide open space in which to exercise and play. It is important for Mudhol Hound owners to let them exercise on a daily basis, and it isn’t advised to keep them in small quarters for long periods of time.
The Mudhol Hound’s temperament is very good when treated right, but its behaviour is greatly affected by the owner. Treated fairly and loved consistently, Mudhol Hounds can have a great demeanour. Without consistency, they can become anxious and even vicious. Make sure to treat this dog breed well. With the proper family and living quarters, the Mudhol Hound is rewarding breed.
