The Saluki dog breed is also sometimes known as the Gazelle Hound, the Persian Greyhound, and the Royal Dog of Egypt. This dog has a very long and interesting past. Its ancestry can be traced back to as early as 3,500 BC, making it one of the oldest known dog breeds. Researchers have found pots and wall murals with pictures depicting the Saluki during these times. The ancient Egyptians even depicted Salukis on their walls. Over time, they would travel with nomadic tribes across western Asia, the Middle East and Africa. They finally made their way into modern Europe in the mid19th Century.
Salukis are considered sight hounds. Sight hounds are noted for their speed and their great sense of sight. They use these abilities to find and track their prey over long distances. Normally, although sight hounds are very fast they don’t have a lot of stamina or endurance. However this isn’t the case with the Saluki. While it has the sleek body of a greyhound, it doesn’t run as fast as other sight hound breeds. It makes up for this by having a lot of endurance and is renowned for its remarkable jumping ability. This dog can run for very long distances in order to catch their prey.
The Saluki has a lean body with a long, thin coat that hangs from the body, including the tail, legs and ears. They reach an average height of between 58 and 71 centimetres. They are often much taller than other breeds, although they weigh less because they are so lean.
