The American Eskimo Dog is a Spitz breed native to the United States. The breed is not internationally recognised. The name “Eskimo” usually implies people of Yupik, Inuit, etc. origins, yet in this case there is no relationship. This breed is not a sled dog and has no other connection to the term.
The American Eskimo Dog is a good watch dog that will alert its family to dangers, strangers or any animals that might cause them harm. They are widely kept as house dogs and companions as they are not a ‘working’ breed.
The coat of the American Eskimo Dog is very furry and fluffy. Traditionally it has a pure white coat, but sometimes it will have a few distinguishing marks in a darker shade such as beige. The tail is very unique because it is long haired, long in length and curls over the back of the dog in an elegant manner.
Due to its fluffy long-haired coat this dog does require grooming. Brushing them once or twice a week will cut down on the amount of hair that is shed. They shed a large amount of fur twice a year with the changing seasons.
The personality traits of this breed are that they love to be noticed and enjoy being part of a family. They are eager to please their owners, energetic, intelligent and very loyal. Although the American Eskimo Dog is not an aggressive breed they do exhibit a degree of fearlessness when provoked or when something threatens their family.
