Russo-European Laika – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

While the Russo-European Laika was first developed in the 1940s, their ancestry dates back thousands of years. They were bred from dogs that lived in the highly wooded areas of northern Europe and Russia, hence the name. They often go by the shortened name, Laika, although that is also a generic name of some other, similar hunting breeds of the region.

Russo-European Laikas have been typically used for hunting. They have a keen sense of smell that helps them find their prey deep in the woods, a trait that they gained from living in wooded areas for so long. Their coat is thick, which helps keep them warm against the cold, and dry against moisture. Russo-European Laika dogs have a lot of stamina. They can go on long hunting trips with their owners and are able to keep up with long-distance treks.

While they are most known for their hunting abilities, the Russo-European Laika dog breed can also make a fine pet, as they are generally friendly and happy dogs. They even get along when non-threatening strangers. Based on their upbringing and socialisation, Russo-European Laika dogs are also good with children and other dog breeds.
