The Collie is a distinctive type of dog that originated in Britain. It is a working dog that typically herds livestock such as cattle and sheep. There are many types of collie breeds but there are two kinds of canine that bear the simple Collie name. They are known as the rough and the smooth.
The general appearance of the Collie is unique. They are of medium size and commonly have long hair. The hair forms a ‘mane’ that is long and fluffy around the neck, which makes these breeds look distinguished and elegant. .
The Collie has a great level of stamina and endurance. They are energetic and agile. The Collie has powerful instincts and can work very well in a variety of terrain and circumstances. It is important for this dog to have structure and rules in their home. If not, they can become wilful to the point that behavioural problems can occur. Their nature is protective but with children this instinct is amplified. They take the guarding of children very seriously. Collies are not aggressive but will alert their owners to dangers and fend off possible threats.
Collies are not only working dogs any more. Many Collies enjoy life as a trusted and respected pet and companion while others have a more social life and are kept for show purposes. Whatever the lifestyles for the Collie, chances are they will embrace it and become devoted to it.
