The Miniature Australian Shepherd is a sporting and herding dog that is native to Australia. It was created by selecting small standard Australian Shepherd dogs and breeding from them.
Australian farm breeds tend to be very variable in size as the dogs are bred more for their working ability than for conformation. Therefore, until the 1960s, all Australian Shepherds were regarded as the same breed. However, the small dogs got a dedicated following with their own clubs and societies. Although some attempt was made to register them as a separate breed, this was unsuccessful as kennel clubs regard all Australian Shepherds as the same breed.
The Miniature Australian Shepherd looks like a scaled down version of the standard breed. It weighs 9-14kg (17-35 pounds) and measures 35-46cm (14-18 inches). The coat varies from short to medium length and can be a number of colours, including merle, black, and red.

Miniature Australian Shepherds are intelligent, eager, and devoted to their owners. They love to work whether it is stock herding, agility trials, or simply tasks at home. They are known for their friendliness and non-aggression. However, Miniature Australian Shepherds need a constant outlet for their mental and physical energy or they can become restless, unhappy, and destructive.
