The American Bulldog is a domestic breed of dog that is actually larger than its bulldog cousin, the Old English Bulldog. There are currently two types of American Bulldog, the Johnson and the Scott. The dogs are often split into two categories, the Johnson is known as the Classic or Bully type whilst the Scott is known as the Standard or Performance type.
The two kinds of American Bulldog differ in appearance. The Johnson will be the larger of the two, have a shorter muzzle and a heavier build. The Scott will generally tend to look like a larger Pit Bull Terrier. However, there are dogs that are a mix of these two kinds and most people refer to them as hybrids.
The American bulldog has a stocky physique that is toned and muscular. They are strong and athletic dogs with noticeably strong jaws. Their coats are smooth and the hair is short which means that the moulting period is limited. Colours are generally, white or a mix of white and different colours that can include red, fawn, brown and black along with a variety of brindle shades.
The dog has loose lips and this leads to a tendency to drool a lot more than other breeds. Another distinguishing characteristic is the eye colour. Occasionally the eyes will be two different shades.
The American Bulldog is usually a very happy breed that is affectionate and forms a strong bond with people in their family. They get along well with children, assuming that they are introduced to the children at a young age.
