Affenpinschers – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Affenpinscher is a German breed of dog. The breed dates back to the 17th century where it was bred to be a ratter and is known as a “rodent hunter”. While black coloured Affenpinschers have had a history of being more popular among canine clubs, the breed does come in a variety of colours.

Affenpinschers are small terrier-like dogs. Although they might resemble terriers they are not actually in the terrier family, they are in fact classified as being a part of the pinscher-schnauzer group. Their typical tempers are often energetic, loving, curious, territorial, stubborn and protective.

They tend to show an aggressive side when it comes to their toys, food and affection. They are not considered a timid or fearful dog so they can become quite agitated when they feel threatened. Due to these characteristics, they are not usually recommended for children or in homes where small children live.

The Affenpinscher commonly weighs less than ten pounds, or 3-4 kg, and does not get much bigger than eleven inches, or 24-30 cm. The Affenpinscher has a harsh, wiry coat that is generally shaggy around the head and neck but tends to become shorter throughout the rest of the body and legs. Their coats are not prone to shedding. However, as with all dogs, their coats do go through normal seasonal shedding. As their fur sheds it does not require human attention as it will gradually fall out, thus making the seasonal shedding virtually unnoticeable.
