Afghan Hound – Dog Breed Information and Pictures



The Afghan Hound is known as a sight hound. Sight hounds are descendants of the oldest dog breeds. There are currently many speculations as to the exact age and history of the breed. One thing is known for sure, this dog has been used throughout time as both a protector and hunter. Other names of this particular sight hound include Balkh, Baluchi, Barutzy, Galanday, Kabul and Shalgar Hounds.

The Afghan Hound’s stance should be proud and dignified. They are tall and commonly grow to just less than 30 inches (at or under 74 cm) in height. The normal weight of an adult Afghan Hound is between 45 to 60 pounds or 20 to 30 kg. Their hair is short on the back, which looks like a saddle while the rest of the dog has long, fine, thick, silky textured hair. Their hips are higher than other canine breeds and the tail is uniquely shaped into a small ring at the end.

The personality of the Afghan Hound is generally distant yet distinguished but it can also be happy and playful. It is important that future owners understand that the breed has an independent personality that can prove to be difficult to train and control.

The average life span of the Afghan Hound is approximately 12 years. There are specific health concerns that are prevalent with the Afghan Hound. The breed has been known to develop the following conditions: cancer, allergies and chylothorax.
