The Airedale Terrier is a breed that originated in Yorkshire, England. It was originally referred to as the King of the Terriers. Before the creation of the Black Russian Terrier breed, the Airedale Terrier was the biggest type of terrier. Another name of this particular breed is the Waterside Terrier. The alternate name is a result of the breed being used to hunt otters in and around waterways.
This large terrier breed can weigh up to 73 pounds (33 kilograms) and can reach a height of 24 inches (61 centimetres). Their coats are generally ‘broken’ as with most terrier breeds. The fur of their topcoat is a thick, coarse, wiry texture that is not very long and lies close to the body. The bottom fur on the stomach (undercoat) is soft. The Airedale Terrier does not shed all at once. Their hair falls out gradually, which does not create a large shedding problem.
The personality traits of the Airedale Terrier are: highly intelligent, strong willed, stubborn, independent, fearless, alert, entertaining, energetic, compassionate and fun loving. They can work well as a hunter and herder due to their strong, heroic and courageous temperaments. They delight in trying to outwit or outsmart people and other animals.
Airedale Terriers are also known for their ability to learn fast and retain the knowledge. Airedale Terrier’s can withstand pain and discomfort. Usually if they are hurt, the owner will not even realize it unless the problem progresses or it is severe enough to warrant medical attention.
