The Alangu Mastiff originated in India. Specific locations include the Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts. This is considered a rare breed of dog. Other common names of this breed are Alangu, Indian Alangu Mastiff, Indian Mastiff and Bully Kutta. They have been utilized throughout history as guarding dogs and hunters. Their nature has allowed them to protect humans and livestock effectively as well as being aggressive enough to hunt large game.
Although the Alangu Mastiffs are large, tall dogs, they are agile enough to capture prey successfully. They have short hair coats and are usually fawn, red or brindle in colour. The structure of this particular breed is fit and muscular, with long backs and a tail that narrows to a point. Their ears sit high on the head. Owners of this breed must be both experienced with large breed dogs and not be timid.
The Alangu Mastiff is not a traditionally embraced as a fun-loving dog for families. In fact, due to the aggressive and violent nature of this breed it is used as a fighting dog in some places including Pakistan. However, this characteristic is not regarded as a downfall of the breed. The Alangu Mastiff has a deep unbridled instinct to protect and guard. For many people this is an alluring quality. It is considered one of the most dangerous guard dog breeds a person can own. Nothing makes this dog happier than having a job to do and feel as though it has a purpose.
