Alaskan Malamute – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Alaskan Malamute is a descendant of the dogs that belonged to the Mahlemuts tribe. The tribe was located in the upper west region of Alaska. These dogs worked well with humans. In fact there was a strong working relationship between man and dog in which the dogs would not only demonstrate their loyalty by protecting the people, but would also help them hunt.

Alaskan Malamutes are often mistaken for the Siberian husky. This is usually due to the fact that both dogs resemble the wolf in appearance and physique. The breed is domesticated and bonds well with humans.

The distinct characteristics of the Alaskan Malamute include ears that are upright and in some cases folded forward, a coat that is dense and coarse, eyes that are generally dark, shades of brown are the only accepted colours; and tails that are fluffy and plumed. They are heavy boned, physically strong and athletic. The personality of the Alaskan Malamute combines loyalty with bravery, but it can also be very comfortable around other household pets. This makes the breed an attractive prospect for people that desire a hard working, compassionate and intelligent dog to join their family circle.

Alaskan Malamutes are vocal when they need to communicate, but are by nature relatively quiet dogs that usually do not bark. They are used to being in the snowy regions so when domesticated in a warmer climate they should have access to pools or other bodies of water and shade to keep them cool during the summer months.
