When Alesha Anjanette Dixon was in school she studied Sports Studies intending to become a PE teacher, but when she was approached to become a member of a band she ditched the degree.
In 1999, with three other girls, Alesha formed Mis-Teeq, a popular British band releasing several singles and albums over the next few years. In 2002, the band was nominated for a BRIT Award and won the Best Garage Act MOBO Award.
The band split in 2005 and Alesha pursued a solo career, writing and singing her own material but was dropped by her record company Polydor Records in 2006. Even so, she knew that she still wanted to stay in the music business.
In 2008, signed up with Asylum Records, she had her first British top ten hit single with ‘The Boy Does Nothing’. The single had international success.
In 2007, Alesha became a contestant in the reality TV show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, a contest where a percentage of the phone vote revenue goes to the charity Children in Need. Alesha won and has the highest ever average score (36.5/40) from the judges. In 2009, she joined the show as a judge.
In 2009, again for Children in Need, Alesha climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania along with other celebrities and raised £1million to help eliminate malaria. Alesha works for several charities and is an ambassador for ‘Help a London Child’.
Alesha will soon appear in her first film ‘Milestones’, about the London jazz scene.
