The Akita breed has its origins in the mountainous regions of Japan. The American Akita is the subject of some controversy. Many countries consider the breed to be separate from the Japanese Akita, known as the Akita Inu. The United States and Canada on the other hand believe them to be the same breed with some differences in traits and qualities.
The American Akita has an elegant form, noble posture and carries itself with a degree of grace and power. They are heavy boned and noticeably strong. They have a bear-like head, soft triangular ears that are erect, tails with a distinct curl, and a thick fur coat that is a result of their mountain ancestry.
The American Akita possesses a wealth of attractive personality traits that would be considered desirable by almost any dog owner. They are brave, devoted to their owners, athletic and affectionate. In addition they have a tendency to be neat and clean, often grooming themselves. Although they can be very territorial and aggressive towards strangers, they are generally reserved around guests and friends.
The American Akita can be a good worker if it is trained properly. They thrive on making their owners happy and will help them in any way that they can. However, the Akita is not a dog that would suit everyone, its background gives it a strong independent streak which can make it a challenge in obedience activities and unreliable off the lead. They may sometimes be aggressive towards other dogs so caution should be exercised when taking them for walks.
