Andrew Flintoff was born in Preston, Lancashire on December 6, 1977 to parents, Colin and Susan. He acquired the nickname ‘Freddie’ reportedly due to the similarity of his surname to Fred Flintstone.
As a child, Andrew played for the Lancashire under 11s team and stayed with them, playing for the Lancashire County team in 1995. Andrew’s international career began in 1996, when he played for the England under 19s team. He made his England team debut in 1998.
During his career, he has captained for the England side and plays not only for Lancashire and England, but also has a contract with the Indian team, Chennai Super Kings. In July 2009, he announced his retirement from test cricket but will continue to play on an international level.
Andrew has amassed a number of awards and honours. In 2004, he placed third in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and then won the following year for his contribution to Ashes, the England’s winning team. In 2006, he received an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List and he has also been awarded the Freedom of the City of Preston. These are in addition to the several Player and Cricketer of the Year trophies that adorn his mantelpiece.
He married wife, Rachel, in 2005 and the couple have three children. They set up the Andrew Flintoff Foundation to support rehabilitation and physiotherapy units for children throughout the UK. Andrew also established his own cricket academy to provide coaching for keen youngsters.
