Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is the daughter of American movie actor Jon Voigt and was born Angelina Jolie Voigt in Los Angeles on 4th June 1975. A year later, her parents separated and her mother brought up Angelina and her brother James Haven. They lived in New York until Angelina was eleven and then returned to Los Angeles where she started taking acting lessons at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.

Angelina was teased at school for being thin, for wearing braces, glasses and second hand clothes. Her first attempts at modelling failed denting her already fragile self-esteem. She began self-harming, cutting herself with knives she collected.

In 1997, Angelina received the first of her three Golden Globe Awards for her role as Cornelia Wallace in the biographical TV film ‘George Wallace’. Two years later, she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie, ‘Girl Interrupted’. In 2001, she played the lead role in ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ and since then has been one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. She was voted the Most Beautiful Woman in the World by People Magazine readers in 2006 and one of the most influential people in the world the following year.

Angelina has three adopted children and three biological children with partner Brad Pitt; their relationship earns them intense, almost frenzied, media attention across the world.

In 2001, Angelina was appointed a UN Goodwill Ambassador and has received several awards for her humanitarian work.
