This is another film along the lines of the DaVinci Code and, in fact, it is based upon a book written by the same author.
Of course, Tom Hanks is back again, but this time in a role with far more action than the way his part was played in DaVinci. In that movie, the action was so slow and ponderous that it put many viewers, including myself, to sleep. In this one there is an interesting surprise at the end which leaves the viewer satisfied that they got their money’s worth out of the price of their ticket.
In this movie a secret society called The Illuminati is out to destroy the long-standing Catholic Church. This society is composed of a bunch of anti-religious “freethinkers” and they manage to steal a stash of anti-matter material that has the capability of blowing half of Rome sky high. They kidnap a few of the Cardinals the evening before they are to meet to select a new Catholic Pope and it is Tom Hanks task to figure out who is responsible by following a carefully laid trail laden with clues. Of course the viewer is following this trail as well, and pretty much has it figured out before Hanks does. And that’s when the movie throws the viewer for a loop with a bit of fancy plot footwork that leads to a most surprise ending.
I enjoyed this film immensely despite the fact that I don’t ordinarily enjoy these types of films. I only went to see it on the recommendation of a close friend, and I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it. Often, it is when you least expect a good movie that you get one, and I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a good detective type movie with a rich plot line.
