The Artois Hound has bloodhound ancestors. It is a type of scent hound that is actually quite rare. This breed originated in France. Other common names for the Artois Hound are: Picard, Briquet and Chien d’ Artois. This dog is a small type of Briquet and it specializes in hunting. It can hunt in packs, can be used around guns and is capable of instinctively and strategically moving with hunters on horseback.
This breed is very smart and can hunt by taking advantage of the game through their weaknesses. Although the Artois Hound are not the fastest dogs around they do maintain a good speed and will see the task completed.
Their hunting skills extend to a vast array of regions. With ease they can hunt in the countryside, thickets, woodland areas, etc. They are intrepid and energetic which helps them overcome obstacles in the terrain. They also have a loud and predominant voice that can be heard from as far as 2 km away.
The Artois Hound has thick skin and short, flat hair. The coat usually consists of tri-coloured patterns including: tan, black and white in various combinations. Its sense of smell is strong and powerful which aids in the hunting and tracking process with great efficacy.
This breed is the happiest when it is getting outdoors and hitting on the scent of any game. It is extremely loyal and loves to spend time with its owner. Exercise is a must for this dog and the breed does not do well living in a confined space.
