Australian Shepherd – Dog Breed Information and Pictures



The Australian Shepherd is a herding dog as its name suggests. However, the name also suggests that it originated in Australia, which in untrue. The relation of the name is due to the association with Basque sheepherders that came from Australia.

The Australian Shepherd is a very versatile dog breed. They have a deep desire to please and work for humans. They have been utilized in various working roles such as: herding, rescue missions, detection, law enforcement, guiding, rodeos, etc. This dog breed is easy to train and loves to learn how to perform tasks.

The fur coats of the Australian Shepherd are generally long, but in working dogs it tends to be slightly shorter than those dogs that are primarily for show. This medium sized dog can be a combination of many colours. Some may even be tri-coloured. The eye colour can also be a distinct or unique trait. This breed was once referred to as Ghost Eye Dog because sometimes the colour would be exceptional. This could include an eye to have colours that are swirled together, two different coloured eyes in the same dog, or even a pale shade that is partially darkened.

The temperament of the Australian Shepherd is most desirable. They are generally loving and devoted animals, especially to their family. They are not a breed that is prone to continuous barking. Due to their energetic nature they love to play. This breed is very protective of it territory and its family so it can be a good guard dog.
