Australian Silky Terriers are a small breed. This specific terrier originated in Australia but the ancestral bloodline was of the Britain breeds. Another simple name used for this dog is Silky.
The Australian Silky Terrier has very short legs. In fact, this particular terrier breed is categorized in the toy groups instead of with the terriers when it comes to classification due to its tiny physique.
The long silky fur coat is a distinctive physical characteristic. The coat colours are typically blue and tan. The hair is usually parted and hangs elegantly down the sides of the dog almost to the ground. Each hair is fine and it has no curl or body to it. It lays flat with a glossy sheen. One draw back to this breed of dog is that it does require some extra effort where grooming is concerned. The hair can tangle and mat frequently so special attention and care must be given.
The Australian Silky Terrier is not a working dog. It can be used for show or for a loving companion. This canine can be easily frightened and enjoys a quiet setting free from loudness or active environments. They are a highly alert dog that loves to play gently with their owners. One of their favourite exercises consists of taking walks or playing with small toys. They need to have exercise but they do not require large or open areas to do so and are quite content living in small dwellings.
