The Bearded Collie originated in Scotland. They are a herding breed and have a variety of different names, such as the Beardie, the Highland Collie, the Mountain Collie and the Hairy Mou’ed Collie.
The Bearded Collie is a medium-size breed of dog. They have a strong form, which is both lean and muscular. They have a certain intelligent expression and they are very alert. Their structure is long and elegant.
The fur coat of the Bearded Collie is unique. The hair looks relatively long, but it is medium in length as the hair does not grow to the ground. The hair is thick, coarse, and shaggy whilst the under coat is soft and plush. This makes the grooming requirements a chore. If the dog does not get groomed frequently and properly, the hair can tangle and mat.
The colours of the Bearded Collie’s coat are generally fawn, brown, black and blue, but other colours can occur. There may be markings in what is known as the Irish Pattern.
The Bearded Collie is a dog breed with hard-working characteristics. They are very agile and enjoy exercise. This breed also needs plenty of space to play and roam. With intelligence comes a degree of stubborn behaviour. Patience is something people must have before committing to this breed.
The Bearded Collies do make good housedogs and family pets, but every person that is considering owning this breed should be aware of the breed’s high energy levels as well as ensure that they are ready to take on the high-maintenance grooming sessions.
