The Bergamasco dog breed originated in Italy and can be traced back for centuries. They are known as an ancient breed. They are a herding dog that worked in the Bergamasco Valleys, which is where they got their name.
The Bergamasco appearance is rather rugged at first glance. The coat has three different types of hair. These hairs come together and form what are referred to as flocks. These flocks are like matted sections. This might seem to be a messy look, but this appearance has a definite purpose. The look helps protect the Bergamasco breed from predators as well as from the weather. The colours of the breed can vary. However, the common shades are grey, black, fawn and white.
This medium-size breed is considered to be a strong, well-balanced dog. They are muscular and powerful. Full-grown males typically weigh approximately 38 kg and the females weigh around 32 kg. The breed is naturally agile, and it has a propensity for speed and athleticism.
The Bergamasco is highly intelligent and focuses intensely on its jobs. They are a determined breed that is intent on working hard for their owners. The loyalty of this canine is inspiring. Not only is this dog breed a skilled and efficient worker no matter the task that is handed to them, but they also make fantastic companions. When used as a companion, this dog will take on the task of guardian and protector for its family. They do need plenty of space and routine exercise to keep healthy and happy.
