Mel Brooks’ YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974) is a comedy gem from a master of the slow build-up to a gut-busting pay-off. Every joke is like a whole comedy routine packed into a few moments.
This film concerns itself with the return of Dr. Frankenstein’s son, Frederick (Gene Wilder), to his father’s laboratory and work, with hilarious results. Starring such comedic talents as Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Kenneth Mars, Madeline Kahn, Gene Hackman and of course, Mel Brooks himself, the film is a knee-slapper from the opening scene to the credits. But don’t take my word for it, here are a few quotable quotes for you:
*
Dr. Frankenstein:
Would you mind telling me, whose brain I did put in,
Igor:
And, you won’t be angry,
Dr. Frankenstein:
I will not be angry.
Igor:
Abby-someone.
Dr. Frankenstein:
Abby-someone. Abby who,
Igor:
Abby-normal.
*
Dr. Frankenstein:
Werewolf,
Igor:
There.
Dr. Frankenstein:
What,
Igor:
There wolf. There castle.
Dr. Frankenstein:
Why are you talking that way,
Igor:
I thought you wanted to.
*
Igor:
Dr. Frankenstein,
Dr. Frankenstein:
Fronkensteen.
Igor:
You’re putting me on.
Dr. Frankenstein:
No, it’s pronounced: Fronkensteen.
Igor:
Do you also say, Froaderick,
Dr. Frankenstein:
No, Frederick.
Igor:
Well, why isn’t it: Froaderick Fronkensteen,
Dr. Frankenstein:
It isn’t. It’s Frederick Fronkensteen.
Igor:
I see.
Dr. Frankenstein:
You must be Igor.
Igor:
No, it’s pronounced: I-gore.
Dr. Frankenstein:
But, they told me it was Igor.
Igor:
Well, they were wrong then, weren’t they,
*
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein:
It’s alive!
