Birds for Beginners

Not all species of pet birds are suitable for first-time bird owners. Some species require special diets, are aggressive or need other special handling. Pet bird species that are good for beginners are birds that are generally hardy, friendly and can eat a wide-ranging diet.

Canaries

These are hearty, attractive birds that will die of loneliness if they never see another canary again. They are highly intelligent and can learn basic commands, such as to come when called. Keep in mind that only the males sing the incredible songs canaries are known for.

Budgerigars (Parakeets)

These are relatively inexpensive, cheeky companions that can make very patient teachers for willing bird care students. They need companionship, whether you yourself are able to provide it, or if you get another budgie to keep them company. Since they are so popular, a lot of budgie husbandry information is easy to find. They live up to fifteen years.

Peach-Faced Lovebirds

These are small, attractive birds that enjoy human company and sometimes learn to talk. They also have the virtue of being one of the quietest species of pet birds. They can bond very strongly with people, but often are sold as pairs.

Zebra Finches

Originally from Australia, they have now dominated the pet bird scene in many countries. They are friendly, chatty and hardy. They can tolerate some sudden changes in temperature. Since they are also very popular, finding information on their care is also easy to find. They are small enough to fit into many commercially made cages.
