The Black and Tan Coonhound originated in the United States of America. It is primarily known as the American Black and Tan Coonhound. It is a blend of superior scent tracking dog breeds, which is why this specific canine is one of the best at hunting and tracking. The breeds used in creating the Black and Tan Coonhound are the Virginia Foxhound, American Foxhound and the Bloodhound.
The Black and Tan Coonhound is an excellent racoon hunter, which is why it is named a coonhound. However, this breed is not exclusively a racoon hunter. Its talents allow it to effectively hunt a number of game, including large animals like bear, deer, mountain lion, cougar, and several others. This dog can work in packs or alone, so they do have good socialization skills.
The temperament of this dog is desirable to most. It is loyal, eager and agile. It loves being outdoors and having active adventures with humans. However, because it is a dog that lives by its sense of smell, it can present trouble at inopportune moments. Keeping this dog on a leash while outside is a wise move.
While the Black and Tan Coonhound is good at alerting the presence of strangers and dangerous situations, it does not make a very good guard dog or attack dog. It is not a biter. It does, however, make plenty of noise. The howling can be considered a draw back, along with the fact that this breed is a heavy drooling type.
