Black Russian Terrier – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

In the 1930s, careful selection for the breeding of the Black Russian Terrier took place in order to serve the Russian military. The various breeds chosen to create this dog were Rottweiler, Giant Schnauzer and Airedale. The Russian military was trying to combine certain traits to design the perfect, hard-working dog. This breeding was successful, and the Black Russian Terrier has been utilized as a guard dog, police dog, and an array of other tasks. It can also endure extreme cold conditions such as what is seen during a Russian winter.
The physical appearance is unique and can easily be identified. It is larger than a medium sized dog but slightly smaller than a large dog. It is heavy boned, muscular, with tight fitting, elastic skin, and it coat is distinct. Its black coloured coat is made of thick, long, hard, dense hairs. The long haired coat doesn’t thin out anywhere on the dog; it is equal all over the body, including legs and paws.

The Black Russian Terrier needs to have a human bond. It is happiest when it is active and interacting with its much loved human companion. It is very smart, so whatever the task an owner would need it for, the Black Russian Terrier can be trained rather easily. This breed is very loyal and thrives with an athletic lifestyle. The Black Russian Terrier is also protective, so it can make a good watchdog. It is not timid, but it is also not aggressive unless it is defending its family or territory.
