The Blackmouth Cur originated in the United States. It started out in the southern regions, though it has recently become popular in other parts of the United States. Other common names of this breed are: Southern Cur, Blackmouth Cur, Yellow Blackmouth Cur, American Blackmouth Cur, Ladner Blackmouth Cur, Red Blackmouth Cur and the Ladner Yellow Blackmouth Cur.
This breed is a very powerful and muscular canine. It is medium in size and its legs are valuable assets. The length and strength of its legs allow this dog to not only move fast, but it also moves with ease on practically any terrain. It is definitely a working breed. It can handle countless jobs efficiently; however, training may be required, depending on the job.
The coat is short and dense, and the textures can vary. The colours are typically brindle, yellow, red, black or brown, but the muzzle is always the same and is the distinct feature that the breed was named for. The colour of the muzzle is black, and it sometimes has a unique facial mask pattern, which is also black.
The Blackmouth Cur is an exceptional hunter. It uses all of its senses to find the game and then strategically and quietly works with its human partner to secure the animal. This dog is lively, athletic and is very protective of its owner. It wants to please its owner and will try very hard to make the owner happy. It must have exercise daily. It is not a housedog that will be happy lying around.
