The Bolognese is a Bichon type of dog that originated in Italy. Typically, a small breed, they were named for the city of Bologna. Other names for the Bolognese are Bichon Bolognese, the Bolognese Toy Dog, the Bologneser, Bolo, the Botoli and the Bottolo. The Bolognese has been bred as a companion dog. The breed has been highly priced by nobility as far back as the 1500’s where they could be found adorning the lap of many a noble lady.
They are distinctive in appearance with a white single coat, which is light and fluffy. The hairs form ringlets and are more similar to wool than a silky texture. The Bolognese requires daily brushing to keep the coat healthy and tangle free; however, no clipping is needed. The tail is curled and carried over the back. The fur is pure white; there is no other colour or shade on the body of this dog.
This breed is a loving and smart canine. They enjoy being close to their human companions but can be shy around strangers. The Bolognese enjoys learning tricks and having fun with their owners. They have a deep desire to please and are eager to learn new things. Making their owners happy is a top priority with them.
These are not working dogs and thus are not suited for any type of labour. This playful breed must have daily exercise to keep them healthy and happy. The Bolognese does not have an aggressive or bossy nature. In fact, they can get along with anybody including children and are generally playful.
