Bouvier des Flandres – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Bouvier des Flandres originated in Flandres, Belgium. The breed is a relatively new breed dating back to the late 19th century, when a selective breeding programme was started. Although its ancestry is not known for certain, it is believed that the Flanders is a cross between a water dog, the Dutch griffon and a type of sheepdog.

This dog is a herding breed that is hard working. Their duties entail many things such as pulling, droving, herding, and more. However, they are not merely farm or ranch kept dogs. This breed also has tasks with police departments as well as being protective guardians. Other names used for this breed are Flanders Cattle dog and the Vlaamse Koehond.

The Bouvier des Flandres is a steady canine. It has a powerful body that stands ready for any duty. They are alert yet poised and contained. This dog is very agile and somewhat daring. The Bouvier des Flanders is known for its bravery and courage, which is a noble quality and specific to this breed.

Some of the physical characteristics are misleading as to this dog’s abilities. For instance, the body is short, yet it is strong and responsive. Their rugged coat covers the fact that they are also well balanced and muscular another great feature in this breed. This breed displays no visible sign of weakness.

The overall visual form of this breed is a bit rugged. The fur coat can come in just about any colour but black is the most common.
