The Boykin Spaniel originated in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA. Its origins date to the 20th century when a stray brown spaniel type dog was noted to have excellent birding instincts. This one dog was then bred with crosses of the Pointer, American Water Spaniel, Springer Spaniel and Chesapeake Bay Retriever. The Boykin was bred as a retriever of waterfowl and upland birds. It is a preferred retriever in the Southern USA. Another name for this breed is the Swamp Poodle.
The physical form is typical of a spaniel. However, there are some subtle differences. The fur coat on this dog is flat and can be either straight or somewhat curly. Generally, the fur is between short to medium in length. The colour of this particular spaniel is what sets it apart. They are usually a solid chocolate colour and sometimes they have a small white patch on their chest.
The Boykin Spaniel is a sociable and loving dog that enjoys a family environment. They can easily get a long with children and other pets. These bright canines are enthusiastic, energetic, and are devoted to their owners. Their skills are masterful when it comes to water activities such as swimming and easily retrieving game from watery areas.
This breed is lively so they must have vigorous daily exercise. If this breed is not kept active and their minds entertained, they will find ways to entertain themselves and can become destructive. They can become an excellent family pet and live indoors happily but outside activities are mandatory for their health and contentment. As a highly energetic working dog, the Boykin Spaniel not only needs daily exercise but also a job to do.
