Britney Jean Spears was born on the 2nd December 1981 in Mississippi and grew up in Louisiana. At the age of 11, she appeared in the Disney Channel’s ‘The New Mickey Mouse Club’ in Florida and was a regular Mouseketeer until the show ended when Britney was thirteen.
In 1997, Britney was a member of girl-band Innosense but she was quickly offered a solo record deal with Jive Records. She began touring the US supporting bands such as ‘N Sync and the Backstreet Boys.
In 1998, Britney released her first single ‘Baby One More Time’ that topped the US chart in January 1999, and shot straight in at No 1 in the UK Singles Charts becoming the best-selling single of 1999. Her debut album of the same title also reached the No 1 spot.
Gillian G Gaar wrote that eyebrows were raised over the schoolgirl-in-heat persona that Britney projected in her videos and stage outfits, in sharp contrast to her announcement that she would remain a virgin until she married.
By the time Britney was twenty, she had sold over 37 million albums worldwide; her first three albums entering the charts at number one. In 2009, Forbes ranked her 13th most powerful celebrity with earning of over $35m for the year.
Britney’s personal life is media headlines, losing custody of her two children to her ex-husband, her bizarre behaviour such as hitting a photographer with an umbrella and her admittance into rehab clinics.
