A superb star cast always attracts much hype and attention. Two big names in Hollywood – Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, together in a movie directed by Rob Reiner, elicits a lot of expectations from the audience.
I was eager to check out this latest flick from a director whose previous movies I truly loved- ‘Harry Met Sally’ and ‘A Few Good Men’ could, in my opinion, easily qualify as modern day classics.
However, I was not very satisfied with Reiner’s directorial magic this time. The script of the film seems to be wanting in more meat and yes, the two big actors seem to provide the only saving grace, which saves the movie from utter failure.
The story is about two old men who face the news that they have only 6 months left to live as they are diagnosed with terminal diseases. Jack Nicholson smoothly plays the role of a super rich man who is involved in humanitarian work and Morgan Freeman plays the role of a mechanic who struggles to make ends meet and keep the stove burning in his home. Now that both realize that they have very little time left on this planet, they prepare a “bucket list” of things that they would like to do or have always liked to do.
What follows is an interesting sequence of events that unfold as they travel around the world exploring exotic places.
The film definitely comes with a message- the importance of a bucket list in all our lives before our existence comes to a final halt. However, the focus on the concept of this bucket list gives the movie a one-dimensional feel, which renders it rather flat after a while.
Watch it for the fun and humour, but don’t expect a masterpiece.
