The Cao de Castro Laboreiro originated in Portugal. They are descendants of the molossers and are of the livestock guardian category. This breed has protected livestock against a number of larger predators throughout their history. This courageous dog also has excellent skills in working harsh terrain, such as rocky locations and wild mountain ranges.
This big strong mastiff type of dog is powerfully built. The hardy body is a rectangular shape. The Cao de Castro Laboreiro bears a resemblance to the wolf. This is because of the colours of the fur coat. Light, medium, and dark grey are blended together in wolf-like patterns throughout the body. The hair length is short and the fur is dense. The tail is thicker and longer on the underside of the tail.
The Cao de Castro Laboreiro is not an aggressive canine, but it will become hostile to anything that it thinks is a threat. This behaviour can come from potential threats to owners, family, animals or territory. They are a brave breed that has an abundance of courage. This fearless attitude can be a desirable trait or a drawback, depending on the situation.
Training and socialisation should be implemented early in life to maximise encouragement to behave the way the owner desires. Commands are a good way to control these quick thinking and alert dogs. The Cao de Castro Laboreiro train well and are generally fast learners.
