Charlize Theron was born in 1975 in South Africa, an only child. She is of French and German descent, her first language is Afrikaners and she is fluent in English and speaks a little Zulu. When she was fifteen she watched her mother shoot her father, an alcoholic, in self-defence. The police did not press charges.
Modelling was Charlize’s first profession; she spent a year in Milan, Italy before being signed by Pauline’s Model Management. When her contract ended with the agency she began taking ballet lessons but a knee injury ended her ambitions of becoming a dancer when she was nineteen. Her mother bought her a one-way ticket to Los Angeles.
Charlize spent eight months in LA before being offered her first part, a non-speaking role in ‘Children of the Corn III’ (1995). Her career fast tracked with starring roles in movies such as ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ (1997) and ‘The Cider House Rules’ (1999). She appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair in 1999.
In 2003, Charlize starred as Aileen Wuornos, a serial killer, in the movie ‘Monsters’ and became the first African to win an Academy Award for Best Actress. Described by film critic Roger Ebert as one of the greatest performances in cinema history, Charlize went on to win the SAG Award and a Golden Globe for her performance.
Charlize lives with partner Stuart Townsend and is a supporter of animal and women’s rights.
In 2007 she was listed as the sexiest woman alive by Esquire.
