The general appearance of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever includes some very distinct features, such as their clear eyes. They can come in colours of yellow and amber. Their coat is also very unique. It is naturally waterproof and has a substance on it that resembles oil. This natural element gives the dog a musky odour, but it is not dominant or pungent. An important tip is to not bathe this canine because this will strip the waterproof oils from the fur. This can then permanently damage the coat. Brushing is fine once in a while, but limit the grooming to a minimum.
The temperament of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is highly desirable for most people regardless if they wish to make the dog a working dog or if they want to keep it as a pet. This breed is very happy and intelligent. This temperament makes this particular breed a pleasure to have in the home and around the owners consistently without worry.
