The Chinese Crested Dog originated in China. However, it is believed to be a descendant of some hairless breeds from Africa, although this has not been formally substantiated. There are two distinct types of Chinese Crested Dogs. One is referred to as the Hairless Chinese Crested Dog and the other is a Powder Puff Chinese Crested Dog.
The Hairless dog is not truly hairless. In fact, while the body is smooth and has no hair, they have hair on the feet, tail and commonly the head. The Powder Puff is an extreme opposite of this hairless type. It had long flowing fine hairs and the abundance really makes it look like a powder puff. These names are very well suited for each dog.
The Chinese Crested Dog has a sweet natured personality. It is not at all aggressive in fact it is one of the most loving breeds in the world. They desire affection and cuddly interaction with their human companions. This breed does not have protective layers of skin and fur to insulate their body so this docile creature can be hurt very easily. It is important that anyone who meets it is aware of this. They are alert and intelligent enough to perform tricks but this gentle dog is not a protector or guard dog.
The Chinese Crested Dog needs plenty of exercise but is well suited for apartment life or a small dwelling without a yard. They should be walked and played with frequently. Because of the hair and lack of hair, this breeds needs to be kept warm during chilly weather.
