Never assume that your local vet or the vet your dogs and cats go to will be competent enough to take care of pet birds. You need to find a vet for your bird before you bring your bird home. Birds need annual check ups and often get scrapes due to their mischievousness. You need to have a vet lined up before an emergency happens.
Ask Your Vet
If you already have a vet for your other pets, ask him or her directly if they are any good with birds. Vets will be honest about animals they don’t have any experience with. It just makes good business sense. Vets are a great source for recommendations for avian (bird) vets.
Ask Your Local Shelter
If you have an animal shelter near you, you can ask them for recommendations for local avian vets. Animal shelters all over the UK not only get more traditional pets, but a lot of pet birds as well. Be patient in getting a response. You may have to ask a couple of times, as shelters are very busy places.
Questions To Ask Potential Vets
Before you decide on a vet, be sure you get some answers to these questions:
Have you ever had pet birds,
How many birds do you see a year,
Do you offer after hours services or home visits,
What kind of payment do you accept,
Can payment be in instalments or does it have to be paid all in full,
