Choosing the food for your reception is dependent on several things: your budget, your venue, your number of guests and whether or not you have a theme.
A rule of thumb when planning a menu for your reception: keep pork and shellfish out of the menu, as the former is offensive to some religions and the latter is a common food for allergic reactions. Have a vegetarian option included in your starter and main course and avoid heavily spiced food unless there are lighter options provided to your guests.
Is there a required head count and if you go under it will you be charged more, Will children’s meals be the same price or less, Do you wish to provide food for your ‘vendors’ and is there a lesser charge for ‘vendor’ meals,
Sending out menus with wedding invitations and requesting your guests to indicate their preference for their meal can assist you in your dealings with the caterer. A buffet style menu may be more to your liking as you can have a variety of foods available which will almost definitely have something to suit everyone in it.
In summer you may consider it a good idea to have a lighter meal, with summer fruits and vegetables and an assortment of hot and cold meats, while in winter hearty stews, roasts and chunky bread rolls with a delightful hot pudding served afterwards could be more appropriate.
Your choice of food is entirely up to you, and it can be as decadent or simple as you desire.
