Choosing Your Pet Bird

Although birds are attractive and fun, they are a lot of work. You need to be able to choose the pet bird that fits in best with your lifestyle and personality. A pet bird should never be an impulse buy or be given as a gift. This is a recipe for a pet being abandoned at a shelter.

The Bird’s Size

Smaller birds take up a lot less room and make less mess, although a bird still will defecate every ten minutes on average. Smaller birds like finches and budgerigars also don’t live as long as large parrots or macaws, which can live up to fifty years or more.

Take an honest look abut your home to see how much room you have for a good sized cage and an exercise area. If you live in a flat that allows pet birds, then you really only have the choice of getting the smallest pet birds available.

Temperament

Ideally, you will get to meet a few birds of the species you are thinking about before you bring one home. In this way, you get to see which birds are more outgoing and which are more reserved.

Generally, birds are a very needy bunch. Most of the pet species lived in flocks when in the wild and are not used to being on their own. You will have to act as the flock substitute, or you face having to get yet another bird of the same species to keep your first bird company.
