The Chow Chow originated in Mongolia. However, it is considered a Chinese dog and native to the area. This breed is descendant from the wolf. They are a working breed that hunts, herds and guards.
The Chow Chow has two very distinctive traits that will easily set it apart from other dogs. One of these is perhaps the most noticeable, the tongue. Their tongues are a blue and black colour. The second trait is the very odd set of back legs that are completely straight. This is noticeable when the dog walks.
The fur coat of the Chow Chow is very furry and fluffy. There are primarily two types of coats. One is smooth and the other is rough. The colours commonly consist of solid shades including black, red, white, grey, tan, cinnamon and blue. The colours can be a little lighter or darker of the same tint but never parti-coloured.
The temperament of the Chow Chow is desirable as long as they understand that the owner is in control. It is important they be socialized with other animals and children in the home at a young age. They are territorial and highly protective but not very aggressive unless provoked.
This might be considered a high maintenance dog due the grooming requirements and the fact that this dog will most likely need training. They need to understand that the owner is in control or behavioural problems can occur. Training and early socialization can tremendously help the life long attitude of the Chow Chow.
