Which of these two clichés are you absolutely fed up with – over protective dads or workaholic, neglectful dads, Lawrence does a mighty fine act as the first one. As James Porter, a complete family man and an honest police officer, he lives by the old world rules and often ends up mixing his personal and professional lives together. This happens all too often, much to the discomfort of his precocious, young daughter. Melanie (Raven-Seymone from That’s So Raven) is tired of her overprotective papa butting into her life, especially when things start looking interesting. James wants his daughter to go to Northwestern University, which is closer to their home, but Melanie has set her sights on the far away school of Georgetown. So James and Melanie undertake a road trip and James tries everything in his power to bond with his daughter and possibly get her to change her mind.
While the mother is sensible enough to stay home and away from the superficial, lame jokes, her son, Trey makes sure he and his fat pig tag along – a sure shot sign that this 80-minute movie cannot be sustained by the central relationship. Another wacky cliché that had to be made a part of the movie was that of the irritating travel companions. Another father-daughter duo (Doug and Wendy) is travelling with them and is always so happy that they soon become intolerable to their company. I better not reveal what happens in the rest of the movie. But College Road Trip despite its overdone, often lame jokes is a clean, fun trip – something that can be watched with the entire family.
