Uncontrolled populations of rodents can cause major unfavourable effects in the community. Rats are capable of producing a large amount of urine, hair and faecal pellets which are very capable of contaminating and soiling large areas. Their methods of burrowing, gnawing and nesting can cause significant property damage. They are also capable of transmitting plague, salmonella, leptospirosis, rat bite fever, typhus and other diseases.
There are a number of measures one can take to control the population of rodents.
Weatherproof the windows and doors of your home. Seal pipe chases, outer openings and wire entrances with aluminium, steel wool or wire mesh. You can also secure pet doors at night. Remove any unnecessary materials, brush, clutter or foliage from your property. Keep your trash cans covered; do not put “food” garbage anywhere and do not leave pet food outside.
When conducting rodent control measures, it is highly recommended that you use a commercial pest control company. Glue, snap-type and other rodent-proofing traps are also effective in eliminating rodents. When using traps, do not place them near pets or children. Using over the counter pest controls are also useful. However, make sure that the pest controls are used safely and out of reach of pests and children, or use them with the supervision of a licenced pest control company.
The above ways to control rodent pests can be very effective but must be used carefully. The welfare of the people who could be at risk should also be considered if the measures are not carried out properly.
