This is one of those classic horror/thrillers from the 1950s, and as an added bonus, it was shot in 3-D. If you’re able to see it that way, it’s a great movie to watch. It was filmed in Florida in one of the warm springs the state is famous for. A group of explorers finds fossil evidence of some sort of humanoid water-breather, and they go searching for further fossils.
Of course, this being a horror movie, they find a living specimen of the creature (in, where else, a black lagoon!). When they try to escape, they discover the creature has blocked the entrance to the lagoon, and then it kidnaps the lovely Kay (Julie Adams), the only lady on the expedition. Of course, he’s fallen in love with her. It is up to the men to mount a rescue and escape from the lagoon.
As this is a 3-D movie, there are plenty of scenes with the creature lunging or reaching for people and things, and lots of other items coming at the audience. Some effects are a bit lame, but the movie still manages to deliver some decent thrills and frights.
Some aspects of the story are a bit dated. The effects are less than stellar, and using the old “damsel in distress” routine will be seen as downright sexist today. Yet, the movie is still a good example of the classic monster movie genre and well worth watching.
