The Dachshund is a very unique dog. This breed originated in Germany. This dog is commonly called a variety of names that describe the look of its structure or a shorter version of their given name such as: wiener dog, Doxie, Worshund, Dackel, sausage dog, etc.
The Dachshund was created to hunt small game such as rabbits and burrowing type of animals. There is some controversy surrounding the actual type of dog classification; hound or terrier. They are highly skilled in following scent and chasing.
The most identifiable characteristic of the Dachshund is the incredibly short legs. The dog is rather long and the body is low to the ground. The ears drop down and lay against the side of the face and the head is rather small. There are different types of Dachshund; the miniature and the standard. The miniature belongs in the small breed category while the standard is of medium size.
The Dachshund is a playful, fun-loving dog that enjoys a good chase. They need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. They can be aggressive and stubborn so training might be required as well as socialization. This breed is renowned for their loyalty to their owner. This is an outgoing dog that is never shy or timid by nature. Their eating habits need to be monitored as an overweight Dachshund is prone to serious health problems and medical conditions.
