Domestic violence

Going by the basic definition, it is anything which is a form of violence between people who are already tied up in a relationship or some sort of a relation in the past. Normally those are between husband, wife, and formal partners. Also it has been seen that adults in the age, genders, races and all caste and creed may be affected by it and can take any shape. The term itself can mean lot of things and also extreme situations, in lot of variations. The term would also necessarily mean that it counts in people normally above 18 years of age and in a relationship. Also as per the statistics, the most number of affected are seen as women. Though the situation has seen both genders affected by it, but it’s normally 80% as women. The statistics also show that around 12 million incidents may occur which fall under the condition. Also it has been seen that most of the cases would lead into criminal offences. All of those cases are completely punishable and treated under law.

Definition

As per the government the definition being “incident of threatening behavior, violence or abuse between adults in relationship”. For seeing some of the conditions or by the government terms, the abuse contains kindling feelings of fear and intimidation, physical abuse which may include hitting or kicking, abuse on emotional basis which may include name calling and threatening, and also sexual assaults which would mean having sex when the other person does not want to. Some of the criminal offences which are counted by the government under these clauses may include threat to kill, wounding, and assault in physical and mental form, choke attempts, harassments, fear of violence induced in the relation and also rape or some other sexual assault. In some of the cases, where the assault may not be completely punishable or does not fall under criminal offence, but still can be called for some support and also help. Also it is advisable to seek for help instinctually if there is a feeling of danger or any foreseeing of such things. There could be some warning signs from the domestic abuse which may include controlling behavior, history of domestic violence, breaking, punching things, threatening to harm someone or any suicide threats, threat to take children away, threat to harm themselves.


Facts

There are some facts associated with the domestic violence and the numbers associated with the cases are quite high and rising in the nuclear society. It has also been seen that more than half of the cases are not even reported so the correct figures may not be available. Figures also point out that most of the cases are seen towards women than men. The other facts related to it are that out of every four, one women is found to be victim of such a domestic violence. For men, this is one for every six men being victim of the condition. Also one incident is reported every minute.
