Teens do stupid things and when they post them on their facebook/blog/website, a parent or teacher may notice and they get in trouble. When it’s Miley Cyrus, the media also takes note and a scandal is born. In 2009, a photo of Cyrus and several friends using their fingers to slant their eyes hit the web. One person in the photo refrains from making the face and he’s the lone Asian American. After seeing the shot, an Asian-American advocacy group issued a statement saying, “The photograph of Miley Cyrus and other individuals slanting their eyes currently circulating the Internet is offensive to the Asian Pacific American community and sets a terrible example for her many young fans. This image falls within a long and unfortunate history of people mocking and denigrating individuals of Asian descent.”
The group asked for an apology and got one, sort of. “Well, I’m sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context!” said Cyrus, in a post on her website, MileyWorld.com, “In NO way was I making fun of any ethnicity! I was simply making a goofy face. When did that become newsworthy, It seems someone is trying to make something out of nothing to me. I definitely feel like the press is trying to make me out as the new ‘BAD GIRL’!” Days later, Cyrus apologised again, amid criticism that her first apology wasn’t good enough. She said, “I want to thank all of my fans for their support not only this week, but always! I really wanted to stress how sorry I am if the photo of me with my friends offended anyone. I have learned a valuable lesson from this and know that sometimes my actions can be unintentionally hurtful. I know everything is a part of GOD’s ultimate plan and mistakes happen so that eventually I will become the woman he aspires me to be.”
