Also known as the Redtick Coonhound and the American English Coonhound, this breed, in fact, hails from the Southern United States. It was created by crossing English and American Foxhounds with other hunting breeds, including Native American dogs.
Although the Coonhound resembles a Foxhound in appearance, the hunting style is very different. Coonhounds are specifically bred for hunting small game that flee up trees rather than run to ground like gophers and raccoons. They hunt singly or in small packs, baying to alert the hunter when they corner their quarry. Hunting is usually done on foot.
Coonhounds are indigenous to the United States. The English Coonhound was classified as a specific breed in the 1940s along with the other five Coonhound species. It is the only Coonhound permitted to have variable markings.
The English Coonhound is a medium weight dog with a loping gait. It has a short, close coat that comes in many colour markings. The most common colour is red. For this reason, it is also known as the Redtick Coonhound.
The English Coonhound is mainly kept as a hunting dog. However, owners also use them in sports events like night trails and water hunts. More and more, they are being kept simply as family pets. They are hardy, easy to care for, good natured and sociable. They are non-aggressive and make excellent family pets. However, they can be strong-willed and stubborn. They are probably the hardest of all the Coonhound species to train and need strong discipline at an early age.
